On June 15th, 30 participants from 18 colleges and training centres across Scotland gathered to compete in the 44th Annual SNIPEF SkillPLUMB Apprentice of the Year 2018 competition. Apprentice employees Kyle Rafferty & Adam Forrest from James Frew Ltd were both nominated to compete & represent West College Scotland Paisley.
The day consisted of two separate 4-hour practical test competitions for two different categories to win the title of best lead & best copper. Kyle was selected to compete in the copper competition, while Adam was chosen to compete in the Lead.
James Frew Ltd are extremely proud of both employees being selected to compete and represent West College Scotland. Roddy Frew, Elaine Kean & Kevin Kidd all attended and thoroughly enjoyed being able to cheer them on throughout the whole day. Kyle & Adam both done exceptionally well of highlighting the skills they have achieved throughout college and the workplace.
Kyle said, ‘’It was a really good experience and something that I have learnt a lot from. It was also good to see the standards that can be achieved by other boys and will hopefully stand me in good stead for the future.’’
Kyle and Adam are in the second year of a four-year tailor made Modern Apprenticeship Programme in Plumbing and Heating with the company. The programme gives the opportunity of achieving a national recognizable qualification by gaining on-the job training and attending classes at the James Frew Academy at West College Scotland Paisley Campus.
